Start with the possibility of loss

Risk tolerance involves both your financial ability and your willingness to lose some or all of an investment. Understand both before assessing a potential opportunity.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) notes that no trade or investment is risk-free. Learning about a product and how it works is part of the preparation process.

Three questions to explore

  • How well do I understand the product? Read about its mechanics, fees and applicable conditions.
  • Have I considered the downside? Identify your assumptions and what could make them invalid.
  • Am I being pressured? Pause and check the facts if an invitation to trade creates a sense that you must act immediately.

Practice with a research checklist

Create two columns: “What I understand” and “What I need to verify.” Fill them in for a product you are researching, then use official sources to address the gaps. This is a research exercise, not an instruction to open a position.
